As a Fisher student, you must have seen people wearing suits and ties walking on-campus. While most of them dressed up for an interview, some might have another reason—The Industry Immersion Program. The Fisher College of Business is dedicated to providing opportunities for students to work closely with faculty and learn directly from industry experts. The Industry Immersion Program is designed to prepare leaders of tomorrow to make impacts in today’s top industries. This primary goal aligns well with Fisher’s mission — “Producing leaders who meet the challenges of a changing global business environment.”
The Industry Immersion Program used to be called the Industry Cluster Program. The Undergraduate Leadership & Engagement Office (ULEO) decided to change the name at the beginning of Autumn 2017. “Through the direct interaction with seasoned professionals, students will have a deep transformational experience within a specific industry,” says Lorraine Pennyman, Director of Programs in the Undergraduate Leadership & Engagement Office, “and that is why we adjusted the name to the Industry Immersion Program.”
The Industry Immersion Program is designed to help students stand out in a crowded marketplace, while giving companies access to top talent and fresh perspectives on their most relevant business challenges. There are currently 9 Immersion Labs: Business Analytics, Business of Sports, Consulting, Consumer Packaged Goods, Energy & Sustainability, Health Care, Manufacturing, Middle Market and Retail. The ULEO Office is interested in strategically growing offerings to include two more industries, which will be Non-Profit and Entrepreneurship.
This program is open to all majors, and 18 percent of students participating have majors outside the Fisher college. “The various prospective and takeaways from this program are amazing.” Pennyman says, “The program is focused on exposing students to various industries regardless of the specialization or major they are in. If a student is an accounting specialization and is interested in a year-long project based on an immersive experience in Health Care, that is fabulous!” The faculty directors of the Industry Immersion Program would like students to think outside the box and take hold of the extensive range of opportunities that await them after graduation.
As of 2017, 80% of eligible Industry Immersion students have secured full-time internships or jobs with leading companies across the nation and around the world. “The Industry Immersion Program was my most valuable experience at Ohio State,” says Kyle Girardi, a 2012 graduate who participated in the Health Care Cluster , “It closed the gap between classroom and career, and led to a job offer from one of the participating companies.” Kyle Girardi now works as a Senior Business Analyst at World Fuel Services.
The 6 credit-hour course requirement is split into two courses for both Autumn and Spring semester. Each week the class welcomes a guest speaker from the specific industry, and students get the chance to exchange insight and network with the professionals during and after the in-class presentation. The next round application for 2018-2019 will be open in January 2018, and the Information Sessions will be available for interested sophomores in December 2017.
